Battery–supercapacitor hybrid storage (HESS) app

A MATLAB app showing how a supercapacitor shares an EV's power peaks with the battery, in three levels.

Speed, power demand, battery and supercapacitor power, SOC, supercapacitor voltage and battery current
UDDS cycle: the supercapacitor takes the peaks (battery peak 37 A → 30 A)

Aim

See how a Li-ion battery and a supercapacitor supply an EV over a drive cycle, how much battery stress the supercapacitor removes, and how the power split is managed.

What you’ll learn

  • Battery and supercapacitor models and power sharing
  • Bidirectional DC-DC converter, DC link and BMS limits (Level 2)
  • Regenerative braking energy recovery
  • Rule-based and intelligent energy management (Level 3)

How to run it in MATLAB Online

  1. Unzip the package we send you.
  2. Go to matlab.mathworks.com and sign in (campus licence or MathWorks trial).
  3. In MATLAB Drive, click Upload and choose the unzipped folder.
  4. In MATLAB Online, open the folder and double-click the model (.slx) or run the start script named in README.
  5. Press Run. Results appear in the scopes, dashboard or figures.
